Major Barriers
Since graduating college, half of my career has been spent in either Davidson County or Williamson County. I spent most of my spare time driving to and from work everyday, so I was unable to really get involved in a civic club. Now that I work and live in the same city, I am more eager to get involved in my community.
Why Should You Be Selected To Participate
I am a lifelong resident of Wilson County who works at a Community Bank that focuses on growing the local economy one customer at a time. I am very proud to call Wilson County home, and I look forward to raising my children someday in the same community the molded me into the man I am today. I am extremely grateful that God allowed me to live in the greatest county in the United States, and I am very honored to get to work everyday with a company that is trying to make Wilson County truly "The Place to Be".
Expectations From/For Participation
I hope to become a better citizen of this county. I have spent most of my life trying to focus on what can make me more successful, or what can make me a better living. Now, I am at a point in my life where I want to make other people successful as well. I want to take the focus off of myself and start putting that focus on my community and the people who live in it. I want to utilize my time in Leadership Wilson to make more connections and try to help and contribute to the success of my community. I hope to develop as an individual and become a more responsible and caring citizen of this county.
Community Challenge / Issue / Goal
As a lifelong resident of this county I have seen many changes over the years. Over the last ten years I've seen our county grow and outpace most if not all counties in Tennessee during that timeframe. It has been trilling to see the growth, and I am very honored to work for a company that directly contributes to that growth. With that said, we all know that with growth comes growing pains. These growing pains can be many things (infrastructure, jobs, more schools, etc.). In the case of Wilson County, the growing pains that I see come in the from the lack of affordable housing. Newlyweds, recent college graduates, single moms and dads, and retirees are having an increasingly hard time finding affordable homes to purchase in our county. For example, I purchased my first home in 2016 for around $150,000 (it was a townhome) and sold it in 2019 for $200,000. That same property is now valued at nearly $270,000. In 6 years that property has increased in value by $120,000, which should never be the case for a small townhome. If I were in the same financial satiation that I was in in 2016, I wouldn't be able to even qualify for the same townhome 6 years later. This is just a small example of how the market we live in here in Wilson County has exploded over the last several years. Additionally, we have seen a large amount of apartment and multifamily developments spring up over the last 5 years in our area. I believe it is vital that we take a step back from these developments and put more focus on building 1-4 family homes. These developments serve there purpose to an extent, but if we want to keep Lebanon and other areas of Wilson County from turning into Smyrna or Antioch (which there's nothing wrong with those communities, they just have an abundance of multifamily properties), then we need to turn our focus on building more neighborhoods with 1-4 family homes (that can be priced at a level that makes it affordable to middleclass individuals). The challenge with that is trying to build a house that looks nice while also making it affordable. I believe it is vital to keep the beautification of Lebanon and Wilson County at a certain level, which means not building large multifamily developments in areas that have 1-4 family homes that are selling for over $1 million. Instead, build neighborhoods with attractive homes that can be marketed to middleclass families. This will not only increase the value of the existing homes in that area, but also allow our community to keep its suburbia look and continue to be a beautiful place to raise a family.
