Major Barriers

My involvement has evolved through the years. I began as a stay at home mom, who ran a local consignment sale here in MJ and met people through that avenue. Then I taught at MJHS for 5 years and loved my time there, the people, the impact, the connections with students, etc. But, the opportunity came for me to start my own company with a few other couples and now I see involvement on the adult side, from the business perspective. I once knew only the mom piece, then the educator and student piece, now I also see the employer, business owner, consumer piece and how very vital it is that we work together to keep things moving in the right direction. Knowing what is available to join and participate in is the biggest piece that changed and has to change for more people to get involved.

Community Challenge / Issue / Goal

One particular issue that I feel is critical to Wilson County is the educational system. Although our scores are high and we're known for our school system, and it has many great qualities. There are still issues and education disparities of any kind can have long-lasting impacts on individuals and communities. The greatest issue that alarms me is the burn out rate of teachers and the fact that they are still not getting paid enough to be encouraged to remain in the classroom. So many are finding other careers, and we are not keeping up with teacher recruitment, training, and adjusting of salaries and incentives to compensate. Our children are important, our public educational system is important, and we pay good money for things that are important to us. So, why do we not pay good money for this? My involvement would aim to promote awareness among the leaders of the county/state and those who chose the budgets, and to improve opportunities for more training and incentive programs in the colleges to attract students to the career in the first place.

I hope to gain leadership skills, networking opportunities, personal growth and a deeper understanding of community issues and it's rich history. I know that I will use all of these immediately in my roles as chair-elect and upcoming chair of the MJ Chamber. I also feel that I can use the knowledge and skills that I acquire during the program to benefit the community, my church and leadership there, my personal family life, and my business and role as president as well.
