As Senior Acquisitions Editor for trade* books, I receive and shepherd projects from authors and literary agents in order to acquire and develop non-fiction books. This kind of editor is responsible for establishing and nurturing author relationships for current and future books. Once a book project is acquired, I serve as the author's primary liaison between our legal (contract negotiation) design & production (creative), and marketing teams. This job is to books what a producer is to a music album. * Trade books is a broad category of books that is neither childrens nor academic.

Major Barriers
Barriers: 1) Most of my professional experience has been in national organizations, or organizations not based in Lebanon/Wilson County. I'm interested in discovering where my experience might best serve Wilson County. 2) I have lived in the Nashville area longer than I have lived anywhere else (18+ years), but I am still relatively new to Wilson County (<5 years as a resident). 3) Heart surgery and the related recovery delayed a number of professional pursuits and networking. What has changed: 1 & 2) Networking has helped me get to know more people who are plugged into county activities. 3) No heart procedures since 2021; cardiac follow ups are only annual now; I am more energized and healthy than I have been in years.
Why Should You Be Selected To Participate
Two primary talents remain consistent during my career across five industries (music, broadcasting, government relations, nonprofit leadership, publishing): Producing and Translating. 1) Producing = Helping others make their product communicate better: Producing and editing of music or talk radio broadcasts; coordinating religious diverse communities to influence government; coaching a CEO on programming meetings for a nonprofit board and guiding that board to productive action; coaching authors on book proposals and editing their manuscript. I've held an array of job titles and responsibilities, but the role of 'producer' has remained consistent. 2) Translating = Helping people communicate more accurately one another (instead of talking past each other). This is not 'language translation' in the traditional sense. Even though we think we speak the same language (at work, in our community, across our nation), we often talk past one another. Translating between colleagues in various roles has proved a common talent, including between musicians; between radio hosts and engineers, between executives and technology staff, between a diversity of religious organizations and then between those organizations and government leaders; between authors and publishing departments (legal, design, and marketing); between a board membership of diverse individuals from across the country. Leadership Wilson would provide me with a valuable perspective to explore where my talents of producing and translating might best connect with needs in Wilson County. * In the spirit of full disclosure, my calendar indicates I *may* have one conflict with work meetings on November 1, 2023. Further conversation with my employer will provide clarity.
Expectations From/For Participation
Most of my professional experience has been in national-level organizations, or organizations not based in Lebanon/Wilson County. I anticipate the experience in Leadership Wilson will help me match my talents and expertise to particular needs and opportunities in Wilson County, weather in relation to government, business, or civil society.
Community Challenge / Issue / Goal
Much of my professional expertise lies at the intersection of religious communities and the public square, including government and community relations. As I watch Wilson County experience rapid growth along with the rest of middle Tennessee, I wonder how WilCo will weather the changes as our community grows more diverse. The population growth brings much in the way of economic opportunity and prosperity. That same growth can present challenges to unity, especially in an era when 'toxic-polarization' is trending in our nation. WilCo can stay ahead of those challenges by coordinating and training leaders from the religious, business, philanthropic, and government communities. Everyone's Wilson serves as a helpful model for this work as a network of Christian churches and community leaders collaborating to work on the specific issues of poverty, addiction, foster care, and education. Other models and resources exist to equip leaders to prepare for a navigate division within their own community (i.e., a congregation) and between groups within a broader community. If there appears to be opportunity to help 'inoculate' WilCo from the kinds of division we see developing in other areas of the country, I am interested in helping lead in that effort.
