Major Barriers

To be honest, the major barrier is me in two ways. First, I really enjoy helping develop leaders in both the Army and business...it is my passion! Unfortunately, that demands I travel a great deal and, frankly, I've used that as an excuse to not commit more time and energy improving my community. Second, in the Army I moved 23 times over my 34-year career. Each time, I "inherited" a role in the community, opportunities for volunteerism, and a network of people both inside and outside the military installation. Building roots within a community just isn't a skill I have developed over time. So the obstacle is me.

That said, now is the time to learn to grow roots. My wife, Sigrun, and I love it here in Lebanon. This is our community, our hometown, and our "village" of people. I am called to rebalance my own use of time and talents with greater emphasis on improving my own hometown.

Community Challenge / Issue / Goal

I'm not sure I'm really qualified to say....yet! This program will help me discern what are the issues, their root causes, and how we can solve them together. My passion is developing leaders. One area I'd like to examine is how we can improve how the communities develop our youth as future leaders of character?

Company / Job Responsibilities

While I am retired and self-employed, I work in the leader development field in two principal ways.
First, I work with the Army by helping to senior leaders who are preparing to be Battalion and Brigade Commanders. Second, I am a member of the faculty at Thayer Leadership based out of West Point, NY. As a member of the Thayer Faculty, I deliver leadership development sessions on a wide range of topics to executives of major businesses across a range of business sectors. I also as provide personal executive coaching to some Thayer clients.

Participation Expectations

I suppose my answer is the same: perspective. I need the perspective this opportunity offers. I thirst to focus my perspective and understanding of the Wilson County community and explore its various facets so I can serve my hometown with the same passion as I do abroad. With that community perspective, I want to develop, nurture, and expand a network of other leaders that I can join efforts with and become a team. What will I gain....fertile ground that will entice my roots to grow deep and a team of peers that will encourage that growth broadly across incredible community.
